Portmanteau are Caro Appleby (flute, sax, synths), James Rhodes (melodeon, synths) and Robin Fairey (baritone sax, whistles, synths). They play traditional Balfolk dance tunes with a touch of modernity. Portmanteau’s blend of acoustic instruments and subtle synthesizers creates a captivating musical experience that honours tradition while embracing the future.
October 10, 2027: Electro-Bal with Portmanteau in Ibsley
Cambridge-based trio Portmanteau bring their electronic take on French dance to the New Forest! There will be well known balfolk dances (scottische, bourree, mazurka) and group dances like Laride and Avant Deux, but with an electronic twist. They have performed this show to great acclaim at IVFDF and Chippenham Folk Festival.
Novice and experienced dancers welcome, and you don’t need to bring a partner. There will be a beginner-friendly workshop to start the afternoon, and then we’ll be dancing to music from the band.
